What if my trademark name application is rejected?

I paid an attorney to make sure my company's name doesn't already exist. He didn't find any exact matches, so I paid him to register it. He said it takes 1-4 years to complete. My question is: If my applications is ultimately rejected 4 years from now, does that mean I have to change the name of my company after years of building my reputation and customer base?
